திமிங்கில எண்ணெய் முதலாம் உலகப் போரின் போது குளிரினாலும், சுகாதாரமற்ற நிலையினாலும் ஏற்படும்  டிரன்ச் புட் (trench foot) என்ற மருத்துவ நிலையிற்கு எதிரான தடுப்பு நடவடிக்கைக்காக காலாட்படையினரின் வெற்றுப் பாதங்களில் தேய்க்கப்பட்டது.

இந்த நடவடிக்கைகளால் உரிமம் பெறப்படாத, பெரும்பாலும் சுகாதாரமற்ற உணவகங்கள் அகற்றப்பட்டன.

சுதந்திரத்திற்குப் பிறகு, இந்த வரலாற்றுச் சாலை சிலரால் புறக்கணிக்கப்பட்டு பழுதுபார்க்கப் படாமல் சுகாதாரமற்றதாக மாறியது.
