அதன் காணக்கூடிய பகுதிகள் பொதுவாக 'ஒளிக்கோளம்' மற்றும் 'வளிக்கோளம்' என்று இரண்டாகப் பிரிக்கப்படுகின்றன.

வேறுவிதமாக கூறினால், ஓர் ஒளிரும் பொருளின் ஆழமான பகுதியை ஒளிக்கோளம் என்று கூறலாம்.
