திரைப்படத் தயாரிப்பு இப்போசூடோரிக் அமிலம் (Hipposudoric acid) என்பது நீர்யானையின் தோல் சுரப்புகளில் காணப்படும் சிவப்பு நிறமியாகும்.

இலாக் அல்லது இலாக் வியட் என வழங்கப்பட்ட தோங் சோன் மக்கள், நெல் பயிரிடுவதிலும் நீர்யானை, பன்றிக் கால்நடை வளர்ப்பிலும் மீன் பிடித்தலிலும் நீண்ட திமில் படகு ஓட்டுவதிலும் வெண்கல வார்ப்புத் தொழிலிலும் கைதேர்ந்தவர்.

The ancient Greeks and Romans kept in captivity large numbers of such animals as leopards, lions, bears, elephants, antelopes, giraffes, camels, rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses, as well as ostriches and crocodiles, but these were destined for slaughter at the gladiatorial shows.

The Artiodactyla are the only group of ungulates known to have been represented in Madagascar; but since both these Malagasy forms - namely two hippopotamuses (now extinct) and a river-hog - are capable of swimming, it is most probable that they reached the island by crossing the Mozambique Channel.

The collection is not usually very rich in species, but there have been great and long-continued successes in the breeding of large animals such as hippopotamuses, lions and antelopes, and a very large business is done in domesticated birds, water-fowl and cage birds.

Animals, hitherto unknown to the Romans, were exhibited in the circus, and an artificial lake (eunipus) was made for the reception of crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
