நிலத்தின் மேல் மண்ணிற்கு கீழ் உள்ள கீழ் மண் கண்ட அடுக்கு ஆகும் .

எனவே குளங்கள் நன்றாக காய்ந்த பிறகு, வண்டல் கலந்த மேல் மண்ணை அகற்றி அப்புறப்படுத்த வேண்டும்.

மேல் மண் போல மணல், சில்ட் மற்றும் / அல்லது களிமண் போன்ற சிறிய துகள்களின் ஒரு மாறி கலவையை உருவாக்குகிறது, ஆனால் அது மண்ணின் கரிமப் பொருளாகவும் மட்கிய உள்ளடக்கமாகவும் இல்லை.

மற்ற பாசன முறைகளில் மேல் மண்ணில் உள்ள ஊட்டச்சத்துக்கள் அடிமண் அடுக்குகளுக்கு நீர் மூலம் சென்றுவிடுகிறது.

மேல் மண்கள் நீரால் நிரப்பப்பட்டதும், அவை எடை கூடுகின்றன, சாய்வுகள் மிகவும் உறுதியற்றவை ஆகி, குறைவாக ஊடுருவ அனுமதிக்கும் அடி மண்களின் மேலாக சரிகின்றன.
