1583இல் சவேடகான் ஸ்தூபியைக் காண காஸ்பரோ பால்பி என்ற வெனிசைச் சேர்ந்த வணிகர் ஒருவர் வந்தார்.

அவை மடாலயங்கள் மற்றும் ஸ்தூபிகள் ஆகும்.

இந்த கோயில் இதன் நான்கு அடுக்கு ஸ்தூபி கோபுரத்திற்கும் அழகிய மர வேலைப்பாடுகளுக்கும் பெயர் பெற்றதாகும்.

முன் இருந்த சக்கரத்திற்கு பதில், சாரனாத்தின் சாஞ்சி ஸ்தூபியில் உள்ள தர்ம சக்கரம் ஏற்கப் பட்டது.

இதில் வட்ட வடிவம் இறந்தவர்களோடு தொடர்பு படுத்தப்பட்டதால் புத்த ஸ்தூபிகளுக்கும், பள்ளிப்படைக் கோயில்களுக்கும் அடிப்படையாய் அமைந்தன.

இங்குள்ள முக்கிய இந்தியக் கலைப்பொருட்களில் புத்த ஸ்தூபி இருந்து பர்குத், புத்தர் 'அஸ்தி, அசோகா தூண் போன்றவைகள் அடங்கும், அசோகரது தூணில் உள்ள நான்கு சிங்கம் இந்தியக் குடியரசின், அதிகாரப்பூர்வ சின்னம் ஆனது.

1950இல் இந்திய ரிசர்வ் வங்கியால் வெளியிடப்பட்ட ரூபாய் தாள்கள் ஆங்கிலேயே ரூபாயின் அம்சங்களுடன், ஜார்ஜ் IV படத்திற்கு பதிலாக ‘அசோக ஸ்தூபி’ சின்னத்தை நீர்க்குறியாக கொண்டிருந்தன.

வழிபாட்டுக்குரிய இடத்திற்கு மேல் ஒரு ஸ்தூபி-தூண்- காணப்படுகிறது.

அரசர் பின்னியா யு (1323-1384) அவர்களால் ஸ்தூபி மறுசீரமைக்கப்பட்டு 18 மீ (59 அடி) உயரத்திற்கு மீண்டும் கட்டப்பட்டது.

இந்நகரத்தில் அசோகர் நிறுவிய மணற்கல்லால் ஆன அசோகரின் ஸ்தூபி ஒன்றை ஜஹாங்கீர் பெயர்த்தெடுத்து அலகாபாத் கோட்டையில் நிறுவினான்.

வஜ்ரசத்துவர் நாகார்ஜுனருக்கு மறைபொருள் தந்திரத்தை தென்னிந்தியாவில் ஒரு ஸ்தூபியில் உபதேசித்ததாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
