மதுரை மக்கள் அடுக்குப்பல் சுறா (Hemipristis elongata) என்பது எமிகாலெய்டீ என்ற குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சுறா மீன் இனம் ஆகும்.

இச் சுறா மீன்கள் சுமார் 18 மீட்டர் (60 அடிகள்) நீளமும் சுமார் 14 மெட்ரிக் டன் எடையும் கொண்டவை.

கணவாய்களை எதிரிகள் (டால்ஃபின், சுறா மீன் போன்றவை) துரத்தும் போது தங்களைப் பாதுகாத்துக் கொள்வதற்காக அவை நிறம் கொண்ட திரவத்தினை கடலில் பாய்ச்சும்.
