மெல்லிய உருண்டை வடிவலான களிமண் செங்கற்களால் கட்டப்பட்ட குடியிருப்புகள், பயிர்த் தொழில், காட்டு விலங்குகளை வேட்டையாடுதல், இறந்தவர்களை சடலங்களை குடியிருப்புகளின் தரையின் அடியில் பள்ளம் தோண்டி புதைத்தல் இக்காலத்தின் சிறப்பம்சமாகும்.

அதனை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட அமிர்த கவிராயர், “நாணிக் கண்புதைத்தல்” என்னும் துறையில்  பதினைந்து நாட்களில் நானூறு பாடல்களைப் பாடினார் எனக் கூறுவர்.

இறந்த உடலை அப்புறப்படுத்துவதற்காக புதைத்தல், எரித்தல், இறுதிச்சடங்கு போன்ற சொற்கள் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன.

ஆரையம்பதியின் மணற்பாங்கான நிலப்பகுதி தென்னைப் பயிர்ச்செய்கைக்கு சாதகமாகவும் வாவி, குளம், மடு, குட்டை போன்ற நீர் நிலைகள் தும்புத் தொழிலின் முக்கிய செயற்பாடுகளான மட்டை புதைத்தல், தட்டல் போன்றவற்றுக்குத் தேவையான இயற்கைச் சூழமைவையும் கொண்டுள்ளன.

அதாவது கோவை என்னும் பிரபந்தத்தில் வருகின்னவாய நாநூறு துறைகளில் ஒரு துறையாகிய நாணிக்கண்புதைத்தல் என்னுந்துறையை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு அதில் நூறு கட்டளைக்கலித்துறைப் பாடல்கள் ஆற்றெழுக்காகப் பாடியுள்ளார்.

சில தலைகளும், பல பிற நினைவுச்சின்னங்களும், பலவாறாகச் சிதைத்தல், புதைத்தல் மீண்டும் தோண்டி எடுத்தல், புதிய இடத்தில் நிறுவுதல், மீண்டும் புதைத்தல் போன்ற பல மாற்றங்களுக்கு உள்ளாயின.

ஒப்பாரி வைத்து அழுதல், பிணத்தைக் குளிப்பாட்டுதல், கொட்டு-முழக்கு, பாடையில் சுமந்து செல்லல், சுடுகாட்டில் எரித்தல், இடுகாட்டில் எறிதல், இடுகாட்டில் புதைத்தல், முதலானவை இறந்த உடலுக்குச் செய்யும் சடங்குகள்.
