இக் குடும்பம் முன்னர், மிதவை உயிரிகளை (plankton) உண்ணும் பல மீன் பேரினங்களையும் உள்ளடக்கி மிகவும் பெரிதாக இருந்தது.

காற்றுச் சேமிப்பு- நீர்வாழ் தாவரங்களின் மிதவையில் உதவும் காற்றுக்கலவிழையம் புடைக்கலவிழையத்தின் ஒரு வகையாகும்.

ஏர்கோசுட்டிரோல் என்பது சிலவகை அலைதாவரங்கள் (தாவர மிதவைவாழிகள்), முதுகெலும்பிலிகள், மதுவங்கள், காளான்கள் ஆகியனவற்றின் கலமென்சவ்வில் காணப்படும் ஒருவகை இசுட்டிரோல் ஆகும்.

இவ்வாறு வாழ்நாளையே மிதவைவாழிகளாய் கழிக்கும் அலைவிலங்குகள் - கடல் நத்தைகள், இலைநத்தைகள், உருளைப்பசையுயிர்கள் (Salps), கூனிப்பொடிகள் (krill), சொறிமுட்டைகள் மற்றும் சிலக் கடல்புழுக்கள் .

மிதவைவாழிகள் கிளையி உயிரணுக்கள் (Dendritic cells) மனித உடலின் நோய் எதிர்ப்பாற்றல் முறைமை யில் தொழிற்படும் நோய் எதிர்ப்பு உயிரணுக்களில் ஒரு வகையாகும்.

கொடுவா, கானாங்கத்தி, கெரிங் போன்ற மீன்களை பிடிக்க மிதவை இழுவலை பயன்படுகிறது.

கட்டுமரம், வள்ளம், கடல் தோண்டி, தோணி, மரப்பலகை தோணி, மிதவை தோணி, மசுலா படகு, கட்டமைப்பு படகு ஆகியவை இயந்திரமில்லாமல் இயங்கக்கூடிய படகுகள் ஆகும்.
