இனப்பெருக்கம் இல்லாத காலத்தில் குறிப்பாக ஜூலை முதல் அக்டோபர் உள்ளடக்கிய பருவமழைக் காலத்தில் பத்துக்கும் குறைவான ஆண் நீலான்களை உறுப்பினர்களாகக் கொண்ட குழுக்களைக் காணலாம்.

மேலும் இவ்விலங்கு மற்ற தாவர உண்ணிகளான நீலான், காட்டு ஆடு, காட்டுப் பன்றி போன்றவற்றுடன் தன் வாழிடத்தைப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கிறது.

ஆண் நீலான்கள் பிறந்து பத்து மாதங்களுக்குப் பிறகு உடலின் நிறம் பழுப்பு நிறத்திலிருந்து நீல நிறத்துக்கும், கால்கள் கறுப்பு நிறத்துக்கும் மாறும்.

நீலான், பன்றி (காட்டுப்பன்றி), ஓநாய் குள்ள நரி, நரி, குரங்கு (செம்முகக் குரங்கு), முள்ளம்பன்றி ஆகிய விலங்குகள் காணப்படுகின்றன.

பாதுகாக்கப்பட்ட இடங்களுக்கு வெளியே நீலான் பெரும்பாலும் விளை நிலங்கள் நிறைந்த பகுதிகளிலேயே வாழ்கின்றது.

டிசம்பர் முதல் மார்ச்சு வரையிலான இனப்பெருக்கக் காலத்தில் ஆண், பெண் நீலான்களைச் சேர்ந்து காணலாம்.

இதன் உடல் நீலம் கலந்த நிறத்தில் இருப்பதால், இது நீலான், நீலமான், நிலகைமான் போன்ற பெயர்களால் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

நீலான் தற்போது இமய மலை அடிவாரத்தில் இருந்து, ஆந்திர மாநிலத்தின் வட மாவட்டங்கள் வரை காணப்படுகிறது.

nilgai's Usage Examples:

The nilgai is held peculiarly sacred by Hindus, from its fancied kinship to the cow, and on this account its destructive inroads upon the crops are tolerated.

The first group, or Tragelaphinae, is represented by the African elands (Taurotragus), bongo (Boocercus), kudus (Strepsiceros) and bushbucks or harnessed antelopes (Tragelaphus), and the Indian nilgai (Boselaphus).

Leopards still haunt the cane-brakes and thickets along the banks of the rivers; and nilgai and antelopes abound.

The nilgai is about the size of a mule (see Antelope).

The small horns and bluish-grey colour of the adult bulls serve to distinguish the Indian nilgai, Boselaphus tragocamelus, from the other members of the subfamily.

There are also within these coverts several varieties of wild animals, such as the tiger, leopard, hyena, wild boar, nilgai and jackal.

The nilgai, or blue cow (Boselaephus tragocamelus) is also widely distributed, but specially abounds in Hindustan Proper and Gujarat.

The nilgai is about the size of a mule.
