இவ்வகை வன்கூடானது பூச்சிகள், மற்றும் நண்டு, இறால் போன்ற ஓடுடைய இனங்கள் (Crustacean) வகையைச் சேர்ந்த உயிரினங்களை உள்ளடக்கிய கணுக்காலிகளிலும், நத்தை போன்ற சிலவகை மெல்லுடலிகளிலும் காணப்படும்.

வானியற் கருவிகள் மெல்லுடலிகள் (Mollusca) என்பது முதுகெலும்பற்ற விலங்குகளில் இரண்டாவது மிகப்பெரிய தொகுதி ஆகும்.

இவை கடலில் மட்டும் வாழுகின்ற இருபக்கச் சமச்சீரான மெல்லுடலிகளாகும்.

மெல்லுடலிகளிலும் புற வன்கூடு இவ்வகைச் செயற்பாடுகளை நிகழ்த்தினாலும் சூழலுடன் உறவுகொள்ளும் புலன் உறுப்பாகச் (பொறியாகச்) செயற்படுவதில்லை.

மெல்லுடலிகள் போடி மெட்டு (ஆங்கிலம்:Bodi Mettu) என்பது இந்தியாவின் தமிழ் நாடு மாநிலம், தேனி மாவட்டத்தில் தமிழ்நாடு மற்றும் கேரளா எல்லை அருகே அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு மலை வாழ் கிராமமாகும்.

இரவில், இவை மெல்லுடலிகள், ஓட்டுய கணுக்காலிகள், சிறிய எலும்பு மீன்கள் போன்றவற்றை வேட்டாயடுவதுடன், பவளப் பாறைகளில் உள்ள இண்டு இடுக்குகளில் உள்ள கடல் பாம்புகளையும் தீவிரமாக வேட்டையாடி உண்ணக்கூடியன.

The minute structure of the epithelium which clothes it, as well as the origin of the nerve which is distributed to the parabranchia, proves it to be the same organ which is found universally in molluscs at the base of each gill-plume, and tests the indrawn current of water by the sense of ?,g smell.

Among the more important features of the marine life of the period were (1) the great development of the molluscs, especially of cephalopods; (2) theabundanceoflargebrachiopods; (3) theaberrant tendencies of the trilobites; (4) the profusion of corals; and (5) the abundance, size and peculiar forms of the fishes.
