மரவட்டைகள், பூரான் போன்ற பலகால் உயிரினங்கள் கணுக்காலி குழுவைச் சேர்ந்தவை.

மரவட்டைக்கு ஆங்கிலச்சொல் ’millipede’ என்பதாகும்.

உதாரணமாக மரவட்டையில் (வகுப்பு திப்லோபோடா) துண்டத்துக்கு இரு சோடி தூக்கங்களும் (துண்டத்துக்கு 4 கால்கள்), பூரானில் (வகுப்பு கைலோபோடா) துண்டத்துக்கு ஒரு சோடி தூக்கங்களும் காணப்படும்.

இவை தற்கால மரவட்டைகள் போன்ற உருவத்தில் (Centipodes) விளங்கின.

ஆண் மரவட்டைகள் தனது கால்களின் வழியே பெண்ணுக்கு விந்துகளை அனுப்புகிறன.

இருப்பினும் சில மரவட்டைகள் முதுகு-வயிற்றுப்புறமாகத் தட்டையானவையாகவும், நீளத்தில் மிகவும் குறுகியவையாக இருக்கும்.

மரவட்டைகள் மிகப் பழமையான சில நிலவிலங்குகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.

இவற்றில் பெரும்பாலான இனங்கள் இனப்பெருக்கத்திற்கான விந்துக்கள் ஆண் மரவட்டைகளின் கால்கள் மூலம் பெண் மரவட்டைகளுக்கு அனுப்பப்படுகிறது.

மாணிக்கத்தையும் மரவட்டையையும் போலி மோதலில் கொல்ல ஆணையர் உத்தரவிடுகிறார்.
