பேரினம் பிளாஸ்மோடியம் (மலேரியா நோய்க்காரணி என்னும் முதற்கலவுரு ஒட்டுண்ணிகளினால் இந்த நோய் ஏற்படுகிறது.

மலேரியா இரண்டு கட்டமாக மனிதர்களுக்கு உருவாகிறது: எக்ஸோஎரித்ரோசைட்டிக் (exoerythrocytic) மற்றும் எரித்ரோசைடிக் (erythrocytic) கட்டம்.

இந்த வயந்துவந்தவர்கள் ஆண்டு முழுவதும் நோய் தோன்றாத பகுதிகளில் சில நாட்கள் கழித்திருந்தார்களானால் இவர்களுக்கு கடுமையான மலேரியா நோய்த்தொற்று ஏற்பட வாய்ப்பிருக்கிறது.

மலேரியாவின் வரலாறானது 20 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு காலப்பகுதியில் ஆப்பிரிக்காவின் விலங்குகளின் மீது முதலில் அறியப்பட்டத்தில் இருந்து நீண்டு வந்துள்ளது.
