உருளைப்புழுக்கள் தட்டைப்புழுக்களைப் போல இல்லாமல், பூச்சி இனத்துடன் சேர்த்து தோலுரிக்கும் வகை உயிரினங்களாக வகைப்படுத்தப்படுகின்றன.

மாந்தர்களுக்கு ஏற்படும் இந்தப் பன்றித் தட்டைப்புழு நோயை 3000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேலாகவே வரலாற்றில் அறிந்து இருக்கின்றார்கள்.

பல்லி, தட்டைப்புழு, விண்மீன் உயிரி போன்ற சில பாலூட்டிகள் அல்லாத உயிரினங்களில் சில குறிப்பிட்ட உறுப்புக்கள் இழக்கப்படும்போது, அவை மீண்டும் உருவாகக்கூடிய தன்மை இருக்கும்.

மாட்டிறைச்சியில் காணப்படும் மாட்டுக்கறித் தட்டைப்புழு (தேனியா சாச்சினாட்டா, Taenia saginata) எனப்படும் தட்டைப்புழுவைப்போலவே இதுவும் இருக்கும் ஆனால் சற்றி நீளம் குறைவானதாகவும் தலைப்பகுதி சற்று வேறானதாகவும் இருக்கும்.

இராமநாதபுரம் மாவட்டத்திலுள்ள கிராமங்கள் பன்றித் தட்டைப்புழு (இலத்தீன் பெயர் தேனியா சோலியம், Taenia solium) என்பது பன்றிக்கு நோயுண்டாக்கி, பன்றிக்கறியைச் சரியாக சமைக்காது உண்ணும் மாந்தர்களுக்கும் நோய் உண்டாக்கும் ஒரு தட்டையான நாடா போன்ற வடிவம் கொண்ட தட்டைப்புழு.

பன்றி தட்டைப்புழு வெள்ளை நிறத்தில் ஏறத்தாழ 6 மிமீ அகலமும் 2 முதல் 7 மீ நீளமும் கொண்டிருக்கும்.

இவ்விலங்குகளைத் தவிர இப்பண்பு சில குளவிகள், தட்டைப்புழுக்கள், பல நீர்வாழ் முதுகெலும்பிலிகள் போன்ற பாலூட்டியல்லாத விலங்குகளில் மட்டுமே காணப்படுகிறது.
