The treatment consists in the use of enemata containing quassia, carbolic acid, vinegar or turpentine or even common salt.

The chief use of hard soap is in enemata, and as a suppository in children suffering from constipation; it also forms the basis of many pills; given in warm water it forms a ready emetic in cases of poisoning.

He speaks more favourably of the introduction of food into the stomach by a silver tube; and he strongly recommends the use of nutritive enemata.

Should the patient survive he will probably have to be fed by rectal enemata.
