ಆದರೆ ನೀರ್ಗಲ್ಲು ಕರಗಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾದಾಗ ಈ ಗಡುಸುತನವೆಲ್ಲ ಮಾಯವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತರ ಕೆಸರಿನ ಮುದ್ದೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ರಾತ್ರಿಯ ವೇಳೆ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡ ನೀರ್ಗಲ್ಲು ತಾತ್ಕಾಲಿಕವಾಗಿ ಬಂಡೆಗಳ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಕೂಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿರಬಹುದು, ಆದರೆ ಹಗಲಿನ ಉಷ್ಣತೆಯು ಅಥವಾ ಕರಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಹಿಮಪದರದಿಂದ ಇಳಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಬರುವ ನೀರು ಅಥವಾ ಮಳೆಯು ಸುಲಭವಾಗಿಯೇ ಇಂತಹಾ ಬಂಡೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬೇರ್ಪಡಿಸಬಹುದು.

ಈಚಿನ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಗಳಿಂದ ಐಸ್ಲೆಂಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ 10-14ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ವರೆಗೆ ಹಿಮದ ಪ್ರಭಾವ ಅಷ್ಟಾಗಿರದೆ 14ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದಿಂದೀಚೆಗೆ ನೀರ್ಗಲ್ಲು ವಿಶಾಲ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳನ್ನೂ ಆಕ್ರಮಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿತೆಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಅನೇಕ ಆಧಾರಗಳು ದೊರೆತಿವೆ.
