આ આંદોલન ભારત દેશના લોકોને તુરંત આઝાદ કરવા માટે અંગ્રેજી શાસન વિરુદ્ધ એક નાગરિક અવજ્ઞા આંદોલન (civil disobedience movement) હતું.

ગાંધીએ બ્રિટીશ અવજ્ઞાના પ્રતીકરૂપે કોઇ કર ભર્યા વગર દાંડીમાંથી જાહેરમાં એક મુઠી નમક લીધું.

૧૯૨૯માં બંગાળમાં સવિનય અવજ્ઞા આંદોલનનું કુશળતાપૂર્વક સંચાલન કર્યું.

ઝેલાયાએ ગેરકાયદેસર રીતે, લોકમત સર્વેક્ષણ લેવાના આદેશની અવજ્ઞા કરવા બદલ, લશ્કરના વડા, જનરલ રોમિયો વાસક્યુએઝ વેલાસ્ક્યુએઝને બરતરફ કર્યા, પણ સુપ્રીમ કોર્ટે તેમને પૂર્વસ્થિતિએ રાખવાનો આદેશ આપ્યો.

ગાંધીજી ઉપર હેન્રી ડેવિડ થોરોના વિખ્યાત નિબંધ Civil Disobedience (પ્રજાકીય અવજ્ઞા)નો પણ ઊંડો પ્રભાવ દેખાય છે.

તેઓ એક પ્રમુખ સમાજ સુધારક હતા જેમણે સવિનય અવજ્ઞા આંદોલન દરમિયાન ગાંધીજીના નેતૃત્ત્વમાં આયોજીત મીઠાના કાયદા વિરૂદ્ધની સત્યાગ્રહ પ્રવૃત્તિઓમાં ભાગ લીધો હતો.

સવિનય અવજ્ઞા આંદોલન તેમજ અન્ય કેટલાક પ્રસંગે વિરોધ પ્રદર્શનો આયોજીત કરવા બદલ અને બ્રિટીશ શાસન વિરુદ્ધ વિદ્રોહી સામગ્રી પ્રકાશિત કરવા બદલ ઘણી વાર તેમની ધરપકડ કરવામાં આવી હતી.

નાગરિક અવજ્ઞા આંદોલન દરમિયાન હડતાલનું નેતૃત્ત્વ કરવા બદલ તેમની ધરપકડ કરાવામાં આવી હતી.

અલબત્ત આ મોટા ભાગે હિબ્રૂ ‘કેરેન’નું ખોટું ભાષાંતર છે, ‘કેરેન’નો અર્થ ભાવનાત્મક સંદર્ભમાં (પ્સાલ્મ 75:5) ‘અહંકાર/અવજ્ઞા’ પણ વુલગેટમાં ‘પ્રાણીનું શિગડું’ થાય છે.

ઈશ્વરે ગાંધીને જાણે દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકામાં એક સામાજિક-રાજકીય ક્રાંતિકારી બનાવવાની પૂરી વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપી હોય તેમ (સરકાર પરત્વે) પ્રજાકીય અવજ્ઞા અને તેનાં કૌશલ્યો તેમજ અહિંસક સંઘર્ષની સંકલ્પનાઓ ત્યારે જ સૌ પ્રથમવાર વિકસી.
