1800 ਦੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਾਂਗਾਨੀਕਾ ’ਤੇ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਸੰਨ 1964 ਵਿੱਚ ਤਨਜ਼ਾਨੀਆ ਦੋ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਟਾਂਗਾਨੀਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਨੂੰ 1963 ’ਚ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਜਦੋਂਕਿ 1964 ’ਚ ਤਨਜ਼ਾਨੀਆ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਜੋਂ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਜੂਲੀਅਸ ਨਿਯੇਰੇਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਬਣੇ।

ਇਸ ਦੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਟਾਪੂ ਵੀ ਹਨ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੇਂਬਾ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਹਨ।

1600 ਵਿੱਚ ਏਸ਼ਿਆਈ ਦੇਸ਼ ਓਮਾਨ ਦੇ ਸੁਲਤਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਦਾ ਕੰਟਰੋਲ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਲਿਆ।

1946 ਵਿਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਪਾਰਸੀ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੈਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮੇ, ਉਹ ਅੱਠ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਇੰਗਲਿਸ਼ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਦੇ ਬੋਰਡਿੰਗ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸੈਕੰਡਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਪਰਤ ਆਇਆ।

1964 ਵਿਚ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਇਨਕਲਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਭੱਜ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਮਿਡਲਸੇਕਸ, ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਇਹ ਅਠ੍ਹਾਰਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਸੈਨਿਕ ਤਾਕਤ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਕਾ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਅਫ਼ਰੀਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਤੱਕ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਸੀ।

ਹਰਾ ਰੰਗ ਖੇਤੀ ਸਰੋਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਖਣਿਜ ਸੰਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂਕਿ ਕਾਲਾ ਰੰਗ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਨੀਲਾ ਰੰਗ ਪਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

1964 'ਚ 'ਟੈਂਨਗਨੀਕਾ' ਅਤੇ 'ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ' ਦੇ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਗਣਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ 'ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਜ ਤਾਨਜਾਨੀਆ' ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਤਨਜ਼ਾਨੀਆ ਨਾਂ ਤੰਗਨਾਇਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਾਂਜ਼ੀਬਾਰ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਉੱਚਾਰਖੰਡਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ।
