ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਅਤੇ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਨੀ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਦਸਵੰਧ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਲੰਗਰ ਦੀ ਬੁਨਿਆਦ ਹੈ।

ਦਸਵੰਧ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਨਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਸਤਰ "ਘਾਲ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਹ ਸੇਇ।

ਹਰੇਕ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਮਦਨ ਦਾ ਦਸਵਾਂ ਹਿੱਸਾ (ਦਸਵੰਧ) ਧਰਮ ਲਈ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
