ಕಾಳರಾತ್ರಿ : ಹಲವಾರು ಅಯೋಗ್ಯ ಸ್ಪಂದನಲಹರಿಗಳು ಒಟ್ಟು ಸೇರಿ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುವ ಶಕ್ತಿಯೆಂದರೆ ‘ಕಾಲ’.

ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರವೆಂಬ ಈ ಪ್ರಾಯಶ್ಚಿತ್ತವನ್ನು ಮನುಸ್ಮೃತಿ ಈ ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಧಿಸುತ್ತದೆ: ವ್ರಾತ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದವರಿಗೆ ಯಾಗ ಮಾಡಿಸುವುದು, ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಿ ಮೊದಲಾದವರಲ್ಲ ದವರಿಗೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಉತ್ತರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಮಾಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅಯೋಗ್ಯರಾದವರಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಮಾಡುವುದು, ಮಾರಣ ಮಾಡಬಾರದವರಿಗೆ ಮಾರಣಮಾಡುವುದು, ಅಹೀನವೆಂಬ ಯಜ್ಞವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವುದು ಮುಂತಾದ ಪಾತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೂರು ಸಲ ಕೃಚ್ಛ್ರವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಬೇಕು.
