ಕೊನೆಯಿಲ್ಲದಂತೆ ಹರಡಿರುವ ಭತ್ತದ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳು, ಸದಾ ಹಸಿರಾದ ತೆಂಗಿನಮರಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತೊರೆಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಲುವೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗಿನ ಕೇರಳದ ಅಕ್ಕಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯೆಂದೇ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ಕುಟ್ಟನಾಡು, ಸಂಗಮ ಯುಗದ ಮೊದಲ ಕಾಲಾವಧಿಯಿಂದಲೇ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು.

ಆದರೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಮಳೆ ಬೀಳುವುದರಿಂದ ನದಿ-ತೊರೆಗಳು ಇದ್ದು ಜಲಾಭಾವವಿಲ್ಲ.

ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ಸಾಲಿನಿಂದ ಜುಳುಜುಳು ಕಲರವಮಾಡುತ್ತಾ ಹರಿದು ಬರುವ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ತೊರೆಗಳು, ಅಕ್ಕಪಕ್ಕದ ಕಾಡಿನ ವಾತಾವರಣ,ನಿಸರ್ಗರಮಣೀಯವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಅನೇಕ ನದಿ ತೊರೆಗಳು ಬಲು ಸಣ್ಣವು.

ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ , ಹಳ್ಳ , ತೊರೆಗಳು ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡು ನಂತರ ನದಿಗಳು ರೂಪುಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ.

'ನಾಗರ' ಎಂದರೆ ಹಾವಿನ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿಯುವ ನದಿ, ತೊರೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿಯುವುದರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ಜನಪದರು ಈ ಕಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು 'ನಾಗರಹೊಳೆ' ಎಂದರು.

ಇನ್ನು ಅನೇಕ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಪುಟ್ಟ ತೊರೆಗಳು ಆಗ್ನೇಯಾಬಿsಮುಖವಾಗಿ ಹರಿದು ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ನದಿ ಸೇರುತ್ತವೆ.

ಹಿಂದೊಮ್ಮೆ , ವಿಷ್ಣು , ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು  ತಪಸನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ, ಶಿವನ ಆಶಿರ್ವಾದದಿಂದ ಅನೇಕ ಪರ್ವತ ಶಿಕರ , ಜರಿ , ನದಿ ತೊರೆಗಳು , ವಿಷ್ಣುವಿನ ದೇಹದಿಂದ  ಜನ್ಮ ತಾಳಿದವು .
