जमींदारों (अधिकांश अंग्रेज) की ताकत से दमन हुए भारतीयों को नाममात्र भरपाई भत्ता दिया गया जिससे वे अत्यधिक गरीबी से घिर गए।



उनका जन्म नागपंचमी के दिन इलाहाबाद के निकट निहालपुर नामक गांव में रामनाथसिंह के जमींदार परिवार में हुआ था।

सतरहवी शताब्दी में शहाजीराजे भोसले को निजामशाहा ने पुणे की जमींदारी दी थी।

उस समय इस क्षेत्र में भी अराजकता फैल गयी तथा यहाँ के जमींदार स्वतन्त्र हो गये।

इसी दौरान बंगाल और खासकर कोलकाता में बाबू संस्कृति का विकास हुआ जो ब्रिटिश उदारवाद और बंगाली समाज के आंतरिक उथल पुथल का नतीजा थी जिसमे बंगाली जमींदारी प्रथा हिंदू धर्म के सामाजिक, राजनैतिक और नैतिक मूल्यों में उठापटक चल रही थी।
