९,००० वर्ष पहले ये सिंधु नदी के पश्चिमी हिस्से की तरफ बसे हुए थे जहाँ से इन्होने धीरे धीरे पलायन किया और सिंधुघाटी की सभ्यता के रूप में विकसित हुए।

इसमें सिंधु घाटी से प्राचीन महानगरीय शहरों जैसे लोथल, धौलावीरा और गोला धोरो शामिल हैं।

यही भाषाएँ बाद में विकसित होकर आधुनिक भारतीय आर्य भाषाओं के रूप में अभिहित हुईं।

राज्य में प्राचीन सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता की कुछ साइटें शामिल हैं, जैसे लोथल और ढोलवीरा लोथल को दुनिया के पहले बंदरगाहों में से एक माना जाता है।

ये हिन्द ईरानी शाखा की हिन्द आर्य उपशाखा के अन्तर्गत वर्गीकृत है।

इसमें से किसी वर्ण से आरम्भ करके किसी दूसरे वर्ण तक के वर्णसमूह को दो अक्षर का एक छोटा नाम दे दिया जाता है जिसे 'प्रत्याहार' कहते हैं।

विभिन्न उत्तर भारतीय वंशों 1775, 1798 और 1801 में नवाबों, 1803 में सिंधिया और 1816 में गोरखों से छीने गए प्रदेशों को पहले बंगाल प्रेज़िडेन्सी के अन्तर्गत रखा गया, लेकिन 1833 में इन्हें अलग करके पश्चिमोत्तर प्रान्त (आरम्भ में आगरा प्रेज़िडेन्सी कहलाता था) गठित किया गया।

फारसी से उधार लिए शब्द अभी भी आमतौर पर कुछ हिंद आर्य भाषाओं में उपयोग किए जाते है।

भारत को कई अन्य नामों भारतवर्ष, आर्यावर्त, इंडिया, हिन्द, हिंदुस्तान, जम्बूद्वीप आदि से भी जाना जाता है।

गुजरात सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के मुख्य केंद्रों में से एक था।

अतः ये अभिलेख इस बात के साक्ष्य हैं कि प्रथम शताब्दी में भी भारत में देवनागरी का उपयोग आरम्भ हो चुका था।

यह धीरे-धीरे सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के रूप में विकसित हुए, जो की दक्षिण एशिया की सबसे प्राचीन शहरी सभ्यता है।

१८० ईसवी के आरम्भ से मध्य एशिया से कई आक्रमण हुए, जिनके परिणामस्वरूप उत्तर भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में यूनानी, शक, पार्थी और अंततः कुषाण राजवंश स्थापित हुए।

उदाहरण के लिए, ८वीं शताब्दी के पट्टदकल (कर्नाटक) के स्तम्भ पर सिद्धमात्रिका और तेलुगु-कन्नड लिपि के आरम्भिक रूप - दोनों में ही सूचना लिखी हुई है।

इनकी लोक संस्कृति और साहित्य का अनुबन्ध राजस्थान, सिंध और पंजाब, महाराष्ट्र और मध्य प्रदेश के साथ है।
