शब्दार्थ तंग के दो अर्थ हैं - १) किसी को कष्ट देना।

किसी खिलाड़ी को बार-बार ड्रॉ के प्रस्ताव सहित किसी भी तरीके से दूसरे खिलाड़ी का खेल की तरफ से न तो ध्यान भंग करना चाहिए, अथवा न ही उसे तंग करना चाहिए।

तपस् की प्रवृति का केंद्र था शरीर को कष्ट देना।

पशु अधिकार पशुओं के साथ निर्दयता (Cruelty to animals) का अर्थ है मानव के अतिरिक्त अन्य पशुओं को नुकसान पहुँचाना या कष्ट देना।

शोपेनहार के मन से इसी कारण पूर्व के देशों में एक निराशावाद और दुखवाद का जन्म हुआ, जिसके परिलक्षण थे संसार का त्याग, संन्यास, साधु जीवन, शरीर को कष्ट देना और इच्छाओं के दमन की अप्राकृतिक और अमनोवैज्ञानिक प्रवृति।

इस प्रकार प्रतिकार में प्रतिपक्षी पर शस्त्र से आक्रमण करने की बात छोड़कर उसे दूसरे हर प्रकार से तंग करना, छल कपट से उसे हानि पहुँचाना, अथवा उसके शत्रु से संधि करके उसे नीचा दिखाना आदि उचित समझा जाता था।

अत: जीवन के सभी सुखों का त्याग ही नहीं, शरीर को अनेक प्रकार से जलाना (तपस्) अथवा कष्ट देना भी प्रारंभ हो गया।

कामन्दक ने भी अपने नीतिसार में दण्ड के तीन भेद स्वीकार करते हुए कहा है कि शत्रु का धन हरण कर लेना, शारीरिक| कष्ट देना तथा उसका बध कर देना ही दण्ड के तीन भेद हैं।

इन दैत्यों ने सब लोगों को तंग करना आरंभ किया तब देवों ने हिमालय पर एक यज्ञ किया।

पाखण्डी धूर्त्तों के द्वारा कपोलकल्पित स्वर्ग का सुख भोगने के लिये यहाँ यज्ञ आदि करना धर्म नहीं है बल्कि उसमें की जाने वाली पशु हिंसा आदि के कारण वह अधर्म ही है तथा हवन आदि करना तत्त्द वस्तुओं का दुरुपयोग तथा व्यर्थ शरीर को कष्ट देना है इसलिये जो कार्य शरीर को सुख पहुँचाये उसी को करना चाहिये।

शनि के दो शिष्य राहु और केतु माने जाते हैं,राहु शनि का मुख औरकेतु शनि की पूंछ मानी जाती है, जब जातक को साधारण कष्ट देना होता है, तो शनि केतु को जातक को प्रताडित करने का आदेश देता है, और बुराई या बुराई करने वाले जातक को खत्म करने का शनि मानस बनाता है तो यह राहु को आदेश देता है।
