"डायनासोर" शब्द को 1842 में सर रिचर्ड ओवेन ने गढ़ा था और इसके लिए उन्होंने ग्रीक शब्द δεινός (डीनोस) "भयानक, शक्तिशाली, चमत्कारिक" + σαῦρος (सॉरॉस) "छिपकली" को प्रयोग किया था।

इसलिए पैंगोलिन को कभी-कभी शल्कदार चींटीख़ोर (scaly anteater) भी कहा जाता है।

अधिक ऊंचाई पर पाये जाने वाले अन्य सरीसृपों में पूर्वोत्तर क्षेत्र की तोड़ जैसे सिर वाली छिपकली (फ्राइनोसिफेलस) है, जो हिमालय में 5,000 मीटर से ऊपर वृक्षयुक्त क्षेत्रों से परे भी जीवित रह सकती है।

सरीसृप वर्ग के जीवित सदस्यों में साँप,छिपकली, घड़ियाल,मगरमच्छ,कछुआ तथा टुएट्रा हैं और कई विलुप्त प्राणियों में जैसे डायनासोर और इक्थियोसौर आते हैं।

यह पैंगोलिन की आठ जातियों में से एक है और अति-संकटग्रस्त माना जाता है।

इस वर्ग के उदाहरण एशिया तथा अफ्रीका के वज्रकीट अथवा पैंगोलिन हैं।

साँप,छिपकली और मगरमच्छ की खाल से अटैची, ब्रीफकेस, दस्ताने, बेल्ट, हैंड बैग और जूते जैसी चमड़े की बस्तुएं तैयार की जाती हैं।

इनके अतिरिक्त ये छोटे-छोटे कीड़ों, दीमक, नीलगाय, चीटियो ,मेढक, कछुए, हिरण, छिपकली, गिरगिट आदि को भी बहुत चाव से खाते हैं।
