हिन्दी भाषा के लिए इस शब्द का प्राचीनतम प्रयोग शरफ़ुद्दीन यज्दी’ के ‘जफ़रनामा’(1424) में मिलता है।

(परन्तु हिन्दी में आने पर ऐसे शब्दों से विसर्ग का लोप हो जाता है जैसे संस्कृत 'नामः' हिन्दी में केवल 'नाम' हो जाता है।

यही नाम अंग्रेज़ी सहित अन्य यूरोपीय भाषाओं में प्रयुक्त होता है।

इस कारण से वे इसे फ़ारसी कहते थे और यही नाम भारत में भी प्रयुक्त होता है।

इसका मूल नाम 'पारसी' है पर अरब लोग, जिन्होंने फ़ारस पर सातवीं सदी के अंत तक अधिकार कर लिया था, की वर्णमाला में 'प' अक्षर नहीं होता है।

During the New Empire, except at the beginning, the nomes seem to have been almost entirely ignored: under the Deltaic dynasties (except of course in the traditions of the sacred writing) they were named after the metropolis, as the province (tosh) of Busiris, the province of Sais, 'c.: hence the Greek names Bownptr,ls vojs~, 'c. The Arsinoite nome was added by the Ptolemies after the draining of the Lake of Moeris (qv.), and in the later Ptolemaic and the Roman times many changes and additions to the list must have been made.

The normal number of the nomes in the sacred lists appears to be 42, of which 22 belonged to Upper Egypt and 20 to Lower Egypt.
