संस्कृत में संज्ञा, सर्वनाम, विशेषण और क्रिया के कई तरह से शब्द-रूप बनाये जाते हैं, जो व्याकरणिक अर्थ प्रदान करते हैं।

दूसरे शब्दों में इसे हम शब्दप्रयोग और तद्बोध्यार्थ के रूप की आनुक्रमिक या इतिहासानुसारी विवेचना कह सकते है।

हर वेद में चार भाग हैं- संहिता—मन्त्र भाग, ब्राह्मण-ग्रन्थ—गद्य भाग, जिसमें कर्मकाण्ड समझाये गये हैं, आरण्यक—इनमें अन्य गूढ बातें समझायी गयी हैं, उपनिषद्—इनमें ब्रह्म, आत्मा और इनके सम्बन्ध के बारे में विवेचना की गयी है।

बाद में ईरानी धीरे-धीरे भारत के अधिक भागों से परिचित होते गए और इस शब्द के अर्थ में विस्तार होता गया तथा हिन्द शब्द पूरे भारत का वाचक हो गया।

इस ग्रंथ की महत्ता को देखते हुए कई विद्वानों ने इसके पाठ, भाषांतर, व्याख्या और विवेचन पर बड़े परिश्रम के साथ बहुमूल्य कार्य किया है।

कुछ विद्वानों के मतानुसार यह ऊर्जा विषयक विज्ञान है और इसमें ऊर्जा के रूपांतरण तथा उसके द्रव्य संबन्धों की विवेचना की जाती है।

विषय की गम्भीरता तथा विवेचन की विशदता के कारण १३ उपनिषद् विशेष मान्य तथा प्राचीन माने जाते हैं।

उन्होंने अपने इस अभिभाषण में धर्म एवं राष्ट्र विषयक कारावास-अनुभूति का विशद विवेचन करते हुए कहा था:।

उसकी प्राप्ति तथा पालन के उपायों की विवेचना करनेवाले शास्त्र को अर्थशास्त्र कहते हैं।

देशज शब्द- देशज का अर्थ है - 'जो देश में ही उपजा या बना हो'।

धीरे-धीरे ब्रिटिश ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के शासन का विस्तार हुआ, जिसने भारत को औपनिवेशिक अर्थव्यवस्था में बदल दिया तथा अपनी संप्रभुता को भी मजबूत किया।

एक तीसरा नाम हिन्दुस्तान भी है जिसका अर्थ हिन्द की भूमि, यह नाम विशेषकर अरब तथा ईरान में प्रचलित हुआ।

भूगोल का तीसरा विभाग मानव भूगोल है जिसके अन्तर्गत राजनीतिक भूगोल भी आता है जिसमें इस बात का विवेचन होता है कि राजनीति, शासन, भाषा, जाति और सभ्यता आदि के विचार से पृथ्वी के कौन विभाग है और उन विभागों का विस्तार और सीमा आदि क्या है।

‘कौटिल्य अर्थशास्त्र’ में इन पूर्वाचार्यों के विभिन्न मतों का स्थान-स्थान पर संग्रह किया गया है और उनके शासन-सम्बन्धी सिद्धान्तों का विश्लेषणात्मक विवेचन किया गया है।

कभी-कभी 'हिन्दी' शब्द का प्रयोग नौ भारतीय राज्यों के सन्दर्भ में भी उपयोग किया जाता है, जिनकी आधिकारिक भाषा हिन्दी है और हिन्दी भाषी बहुमत है, अर्थात् बिहार, छत्तीसगढ़, हरियाणा, हिमाचल प्रदेश, झारखण्ड, मध्य प्रदेश, राजस्थान, उत्तराखण्ड, जम्मू और कश्मीर (२०२० से) उत्तर प्रदेश और राष्ट्रीय राजधानी क्षेत्र दिल्ली का।

परन्तु इनमें अर्थ न होने के कारण यहाँ उनका विवेचन नहीं किया जा रहा है।

*(१) विज्ञानों से प्राप्त तथ्यों का विवेचन करके मानवीय वासस्थान के रूप में पृथ्वी का अध्ययन करता है।

इसी में ईरानी का ईक प्रत्यय लगने से (हिन्द+ईक) ‘हिन्दीक’ बना जिसका अर्थ है ‘हिन्द का’।

उपर्युक्त विवेचन से यह स्पष्ट है कि कौटिल्य के 'अर्थशास्त्र' के पूर्व और उसके बाद भी 'अर्थशास्त्र' जैसे शास्त्रों की रचना की गयी।

भारत की स्वतंत्रता के पहले और उसके बाद भी बहुत से लोग हिन्दी को 'राष्ट्रभाषा' कहते आये हैं (उदाहरणतः, राष्ट्रभाषा प्रचार समिति, वर्धा, महाराष्ट्र राष्ट्रभाषा सभा, पुणे आदि) किन्तु भारतीय संविधान में 'राष्ट्रभाषा' का उल्लेख नहीं हुआ है और इस दृष्टि से हिन्दी को राष्ट्रभाषा कहने का कोई अर्थ नहीं है।

भारत आने के बाद अरबी-फ़ारसी बोलने वालों ने 'ज़बान-ए-हिन्दी', 'हिन्दी ज़बान' अथवा 'हिन्दी' का प्रयोग दिल्ली-आगरा के चारों ओर बोली जाने वाली भाषा के अर्थ में किया।

तो देशज शब्द का अर्थ हुआ जो न तो विदेशी भाषा का हो और न किसी दूसरी भाषा के शब्द से बना हो।
