सन २००० में पूर्वोत्तर उत्तर प्रदेश के पहाड़ी क्षेत्र स्थित गढ़वाल और कुमाऊँ मण्डल को मिला कर एक नये राज्य उत्तरांचल का गठन किया गया जिसका नाम बाद में बदल कर 2007 में उत्तराखण्ड कर दिया गया है।
