रबीन्द्रनाथ ठाकुर की कृतियाँ वन्दे मातरम् ( बाँग्ला: বন্দে মাতরম) बंकिमचन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय द्वारा संस्कृत बाँग्ला मिश्रित भाषा में रचित इस गीत का प्रकाशन सन् १८८२ में उनके उपन्यास आनन्द मठ में अन्तर्निहित गीत के रूप में हुआ था।

चन्द्रधर शर्मा 'गुलेरी' ने इसी अवहट्ठ को 'पुरानी हिन्दी' नाम दिया।

चूँकि हिन्दी व संस्कृत भाषा में 'वन्दे' शब्द ही सही है, लेकिन यह गीत मूलरूप में बाँग्ला लिपि में लिखा गया था और चूँकि बाँग्ला लिपि में व अक्षर है ही नहीं अत: बन्दे मातरम् शीर्षक से ही बंकिम चन्द्र चट्टोपाध्याय ने इसे लिखा था।

इस तरह गुरुदेव रवीन्द्र नाथ ठाकुर के जन-गण-मन अधिनायक जय हे को यथावत राष्ट्रगान ही रहने दिया गया और मोहम्मद इकबाल के कौमी तराने सारे जहाँ से अच्छा के साथ बंकिमचन्द्र चटर्जी द्वारा रचित प्रारम्भिक दो पदों का गीत वन्दे मातरम् राष्ट्रगीत स्वीकृत हुआ।

अंग्रेजों के इस आदेश से बंकिमचन्द्र चटर्जी को, जो उन दिनों एक सरकारी अधिकारी (डिप्टी कलेक्टर) थे, बहुत ठेस पहुँची और उन्होंने सम्भवत: १८७६ में इसके विकल्प के तौर पर संस्कृत और बाँग्ला के मिश्रण से एक नये गीत की रचना की और उसका शीर्षक दिया - ‘वन्दे मातरम्’।

इसके साथ-साथ चंद्रशेखर आजाद, सरदार भगत सिंह, सुखदेव, राजगुरू, नेताजी सुभाष चन्द्र बोस, आदि के नेतृत्‍व में चले क्रांतिकारी संघर्ष के फलस्वरुप १५ अगस्त, १९४७ भारत ने अंग्रेजी शासन से पूर्णतः स्वतंत्रता प्राप्त की।

उनका अभियान गीत 'कदम कदम बढ़ाए जा' भी इसी भाषा में था, परन्तु सुभाष चन्द्र बोस हिन्दुस्तानी भाषा के संस्कृतकरण के पक्षधर नहीं थे, अतः शुभ सुख चैन को जनगणमन के ही धुन पर, बिना कठिन संस्कृत शब्दावली के बनाया गया था।

A small community (about 130) in Bombay, known as the Prarthna (Prayer) Samaj, was founded in 1867 through Keshub Chunder's influence; they have a similar creed to that of the Brahma Samaj, but have broken less decisively with orthodox and ceremonial Hinduism.
