इस प्राचीन स्थान को प्रकाश में लाने के श्रेय जनरल ए कनिंघम और ए. सी. एल. कार्लाइल को जाता है जिन्होंनें 1861 में इस स्थान की खुदाई करवाई।

19वीं शताब्दी के गद्यकारों में कार्लाइल, न्यूमैन और रस्किन का उल्लेख अनिवार्य है।
