निम्न श्रेणी के प्राणियों का जनन अलैंगिक और लैंगिक दोनों विधियों से होता है, पर उच्च श्रेणी के प्राणियों का जनन केवल लैंगिक विधि से ही होता है।

अलिंगी प्रजनन द्विविभाजन द्वारा तथा लैंगिक प्रजनन के लिये नरमादा युग्मक बनते हैं।

अलिंगी प्रजनन द्विविभाजन द्वारा तथा लैगिक दोनों ही प्रकार से होता है।

इनमें भेद यह है कि अलैंगिक विधि से जनन के लिए केवल एक ही जनक की आवश्यकता होती है और जनककोशिका तथा संतानकोशिका का विभाजन समसूत्रण (Mitosis) से ही होता है।
