केरल के अधिकांश लोगों की मातृभाषा मलयालम है, जो द्रविड़ परिवार की प्रमुख भाषा है।

उच्च शिक्षा को अंग्रेज़ी भाषा के माध्यम से दिये जाने पर बल दिया गया, परन्तु साथ ही देशी भाषा के विकास को भी महत्व दिया गया।

सन् १८७८ में लिटन ने वर्नाक्युलर-प्रेस-ऐक्ट पास कर दिया जिसके द्वारा देशी भाषाओं में प्रकाशित होनेवाले समाचारपत्रों पर कुछ प्रतिबंध लगा दिए गए और उनकी स्वतंत्रता छिन गई।
