शतपथ ब्राह्मण (७.५.१.५-१०), महाभारत (आदि पर्व, १६) तथा पद्मपुराण (उत्तराखंड, २५९) में उल्लेख है कि संतति प्रजनन हेतु प्रजापति, कच्छप का रूप धारण कर पानी में संचरण करता है।

कूर्मावतार : असुरराज बलि के नेतृत्व में दानवों द्वारा देवताओं को परास्त कर शासन-च्युत कर देने पर भगवान् ने देवताओं को दानवों के साथ मिलकर समुद्र मंथन करने को कहा और जब मन्थन के समय मथानी (मन्दराचल) डूबने लगा तो कूर्म (कच्छप) रूप धारणकर उसे अपनी पीठ पर स्थित कर लिया।
