थर्मिस्टर का प्रयोग इनरश-धारा रोकने, ताप-संसूचक (टेम्परेचर-सेन्सर), सेल्फ-रीसेटिटिंग ओवरकरेण्ट प्रोटेक्टर, तथा स्वयं-नियंत्रित हीटिंग एलिमेण्ट में बहुतायत से होता है।

ताप के परिवर्तन के साथ प्रतिरोध के परिवर्तन की दृष्टि से थर्मिस्टर दो प्रकार के होते हैं-।

(१) धनात्मक ताप गुणांक वाले थर्मिस्टर (PTC) - जिनका प्रतिरोध, ताप बढाने पर बढता है।
