भारत का सरकारी ढाँचा, जिसमें केंद्र राज्यों की तुलना में ज़्यादा सशक्त है, उसे आमतौर पर अर्ध-संघीय (सेमि-फ़ेडेरल) कहा जाता रहा है, पर १९९० के दशक के राजनैतिक, आर्थिक और सामाजिक बदलावों के कारण इसकी रूपरेखा धीरे-धीरे और अधिक संघीय (फ़ेडेरल) होती जा रही है।

भौतिकी का महत्त्व इसलिये भी अधिक है कि अभियांत्रिकी तथा शिल्पविज्ञान की जन्मदात्री होने के नाते यह इस युग के अखिल सामाजिक एवं आर्थिक विकास की मूल प्रेरक है।

इस तरह भूगोल का क्षेत्र विविध विषयों जैसे सैन्य सेवाओं, पर्यावरण प्रबंधन, जल संसाधन, आपदा प्रबंधन, मौसम विज्ञान, नियोजन और विविध सामाजिक विज्ञानों में है।

भूगोल का गणित, प्राकृतिक विज्ञानों और सामाजिक विज्ञानों के साथ घनिष्ठ सम्बंध है।

भूगोल प्राकृतिक व सामाजिक दोनों ही विज्ञान है, जोकि मानव व पर्यावरण दोनों का ही अध्ययन करता है।

बीसवी सदी के प्रारम्भ में आधुनिक शिक्षा के प्रसार और विश्वपटल पर बदलती राजनीतिक परिस्थितियों के चलते भारत में एक बौद्धिक आन्दोलन का सूत्रपात हुआ जिसने सामाजिक और राजनीतिक स्तरों पर अनेक परिवर्तनों एवम आन्दोलनों की नीव रखी।
