इनमें से जिनमें किसी तुच्छ वस्तु या भाव को अत्यंत व्यंगात्मक गंभीरता के साथ प्रस्तुत किया जाता है उन्हें उच्च प्रहासक (हाई वरलेस्क) और जिनमें गंभीर भाव को अत्यंत निम्न तथा विचित्र हास्यास्पद क्षुद्रता, लघुता या हीनता के साथ प्रदर्शित किया जाता है उन्हें निम्न प्रहासक (लो वरलेस्क) कहते हैं।

यह विभाजन प्राकृतिक प्रक्रियाओं और दशाओं में मानव हस्तक्षेप की मात्रा की अधिकता और न्यूनता का द्योतक मात्र है।
