उन्होने २५ वर्ष की आयु में अपना शोधपत्र पर्याप्त तर्क के चार मूल (On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason) प्रस्तुत किया जिसमें इस बात की मीमांसा की गयी थी कि क्या केवल तर्क (reason) संसार के गूढ रहस्यों से पर्दा उठा सकता है? बौद्ध दर्शन की भांति शोपेनहावर भी कि इच्छाओं (will) के शमन की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया है।

शोपेनहावर के लेखों में भारतीय दर्शन का बार-बार उल्लेख आता है।

अपने दर्शन के कारण शोपेनहावर जानवरों के अधिकार के प्रति बहुत संवेदन्शील हो गये थे।

१८३० एवं १८४० के दशकों में स्वयं शोपेनहावर एवं अन्य यूरोपीय विचारक शोपेनहावर के दर्शन एवं बौद्ध दर्शन (चार परम सत्य) में बहुत एकरूपता पाते थे।

लाइपज़िग के विद्यार्थी जीवन में ही वह प्रसिद्ध संगीतज्ञ वेगेनर के घनिष्ठ संपर्क में आ चुका था और, साथ ही शोपेनहावर की पुस्तक "संकल्प एवं विचार के रूप में विश्व" से अपनी दर्शन संबंधी धारणाओं के लिए बल प्राप्त कर चुका था।

19वीं सदी में जर्मन तत्त्ववेता शोपेनहावर ने इन ग्रन्थों में जो रुचि दिखलाकर इनके अनुवाद किए वह सर्वविदित हैं और माननीय हैं।

शोपेनहावर का कहना था कि वे उपनिषदों, कॉन्ट एवं प्लेटो से प्रभावित थे।

शोपेनहावर का इच्छा का विश्लेषण एवं उनकी मानवी इच्छा एवं प्रेरणाओं पर विचार ने फ्रेडरिक नीत्शे, रिचर्ड वाग्नर, लुड्विग विटिंगस्टीन एवं सैमुएल फ्रायड आदि प्रसिद्ध दार्शनिकों को प्रभावित किया।

उनके विश्लेषण और यूरोपीय और जर्मन आत्मा की आलोचना ने जर्मन और बाइबिल की कहानियों के आधुनिक संस्करणों के साथ-साथ जोहान वोल्फगैंग वॉन गोएथे, फ्रेडरिक नीत्शे और आर्थर शोपेनहावर के विचारों का उपयोग किया।
