सन् २००३ में, बीबीसी वर्ल्ड सर्विस द्वारा आयोजित एक अन्तरराष्ट्रीय सर्वेक्षण में, जिसमें उस समय तक के सबसे मशहूर दस गीतों का चयन करने के लिये दुनिया भर से लगभग ७,००० गीतों को चुना गया था और बी०बी०सी० के अनुसार १५५ देशों/द्वीप के लोगों ने इसमें मतदान किया था उसमें वन्दे मातरम् शीर्ष के १० गीतों में दूसरे स्थान पर था।

यदि बाँग्ला भाषा को ध्यान में रखा जाय तो इसका शीर्षक "बन्दे मातरम्" होना चाहिये "वन्दे मातरम्" नहीं।

अंग्रेजों के इस आदेश से बंकिमचन्द्र चटर्जी को, जो उन दिनों एक सरकारी अधिकारी (डिप्टी कलेक्टर) थे, बहुत ठेस पहुँची और उन्होंने सम्भवत: १८७६ में इसके विकल्प के तौर पर संस्कृत और बाँग्ला के मिश्रण से एक नये गीत की रचना की और उसका शीर्षक दिया - ‘वन्दे मातरम्’।
