नम्मालवार का दूसरा नाम शठकोप बतलाया जाता है।

इसीलिए इन सभी द्रव्यों के स्थानीय नामों में प्राय: कचूर, शठी, तथा कपूरकचरी आदि नाम मिलते हैं, जो भ्रम पैदा करते हैं।

निघंटुओं के शठी, कर्चुर, गंधपलाश, मुरा तथा एकांगी आदि नाम इन्हीं द्रव्यों के प्रतीत होते हैं।



ये शठकोप मुनि के समकालीन थे और उनके गीतों को मधुर कंठ में गाते थे।

ऐसा मालूम होता है कि प्राचीन आयुर्वेदाचार्यो ने जिस शटी या शठी नामक औषद्रव्य का संहिताओं में प्रचुर उपयोग बतलाया है, वह यही हिमोद्भवा कपूरकचरी है।

नागर ब्राह्मण के मूल स्थान के आधार पर ही उन्हें जाना जाने लगा जैसे वडनगर के वडनगरा ब्राह्मण विसनगर के विसनगरा, प्रशनिपुर के प्रशनोरा (राजस्थान,) जो अब भावनगर तथा गुजरात के अन्य प्रान्तों में बस गए, क्रशनोर के क्रशनोरा तथा शतपद के शठोदरा आदि।

परंतु इसके अलभ्य होने के कारण इसी कुल के कई अन्य द्रव्य, जो मैदानों में उगते हैं और जो गुण में शठी तुल्य हो सकते हैं, संभवत: इसके स्थान पर प्रतिनिधि रूप में ग्रहण कर लिए गए हैं।

कंबन के प्रमुख आलवार "नम्मालवार" (पाँचवे आलवार जो शठकोप या परांकुश मुनि के नाम से भी प्रसिद्ध हैं) की प्रशस्ति की है।

ऐसा मालूम होता है कि वास्तविक शठी के सुलभ न होने पर पहले इस कचूर का प्रतिनिधि रूप में उपयोग प्रारंभ हुआ और बाद में कचर को ही शठी कहा जाने लगा।
