"LOLcat" एक यौगिक शब्द है जो "laugh out loud" ("जोर से हँसना") के संक्षिप्त रूप (LOL) और "cat" यानि बिल्ली को जोड कर बना है।

अंटार्कटिका नाम यूनानी यौगिक शब्द ανταρκτική एंटार्कटिके से आता है जो ανταρκτικός एंटार्कटिकोस का स्त्रीलिंग रूप है और जिसका अर्थ "उत्तर का विपरीत" है।

प्राय: सभी भाषाओं में बहुत से ऐसे यौगिक शब्द होते हैं जो उपसर्ग लगाकर बना लिए जाते हैं।

१५०० सौ से ज्यादा वर्षों से अंग्रेज़ी में यौगिक शब्दों के निर्माण और मौजूदा शब्दों में सुधार की क्रिया अपने अलग अंदाज में, जर्मनिक भाषाओँ से पृथक, चल रही है।

संस्कृत > सम् + सुट् + 'कृ करणे' + क्त, ('सम्पर्युपेभ्यः करोतौ भूषणे' इस सूत्र से 'भूषण' अर्थ में 'सुट्' या सकार का आगम/ 'भूते' इस सूत्र से भूतकाल(past) को द्योतित करने के लिए संज्ञा अर्थ में क्त-प्रत्यय /कृ-धातु 'करणे' या 'Doing' अर्थ में) अर्थात् विभूूूूषित, समलंकृत(well-decorated) या संस्कारयुक्त (well-cutured)।

कालांतर मे मुग़ल शासन के दौरान पूरे उपमहाद्वीप मे मौद्रिक प्रणाली को सुदृढ़ करने के लिए तीनों धातुओं के सिक्कों का मानकीकरण किया गया।
