आधुनिक चिकित्सा प्रणाली में कंठमाला का तत्सम रूप सरवाइकल लिंफ़ेडीनाइटिस (ervical lymphadenitis) है।

अत: ये कंठमाला का स्वरूप नहीं ले पातीं।

आयुर्वेद में इसका वर्णन 'गंडमाला' तथा 'अपची' दो नाम से उपलब्ध है, जिन्हें कंठमाला के दो भेद या दो अवस्थाएँ भी कह सकते हैं।
