2017 के विधानसभा चुनाव में सपा बुरी तरह हार गई और बाद में शिवपाल यादव ने प्रगतिशील समाजवादी पार्टी के नाम से अलग संगठन बना लिया।

लेकिन अगले ही साल 2005 में बिहार विधानसभा चुनाव में राजद सरकार हार गई और 2009 के लोकसभा चुनाव में उनकी पार्टी के केवल चार सांसद ही जीत सके।

बीजू जनता दल ने उसके बाद विधानसभा चुनावों में जीत दर्ज की और भाजपा के साथ सरकार बनाई जिसमें वे स्वयं मुख्यमंत्री बने।

१९९१ के चुनावों में किसी पार्टी को बहुमत नहीं मिला, परंतु कॉंग्रेस सबसे बडी पार्टी बनी, और पी वी नरसिंहा राव के नेतृत्व में अल्पमत सरकार बनी जो अपना कार्यकाल पूरा करने में सफल रही।

१९९८ के चुनावों के बाद भाजपा एक सफल गठबंधन बनाने में सफल रही।
