भारत की प्राचीनतम कविताएं संस्कृत भाषा में ऋग्वेद में हैं जिनमें प्रकृति की प्रशस्ति में लिखे गए छंदों का सुंदर संकलन हैं।

इस साहित्य से ये भी सिद्ध होता है कि कन्नड़ साहित्य में चट्टान, बेद्दंड एवं मेलवदु छंदों का प्रयोग आरंभिक शताब्दियों से होता आया है।

गद्य में काव्य रचना करने के लिए कवि को छंद शास्त्र के नियमों से स्वच्छंदता प्राप्त होती है।

यहाँ की छोटी-छोटी और असाधारण रूप से सँकरी गलियाँ तथा उनमें स्वच्छंद विचरनेवाले साँड़ अपरिचितों के लिए कुतूहल की वस्तु हैं।

तालों में बोलों के छंद के हिसाब से उनके विभाग किए जाते हैं।

ब्रह्मा का उल्लेख पहले कुत्सायना स्तोत्र कहलाए जाने वाले छंद ५.१ में है।

दोहा, सोरठा, बरवै, कवित्त और सवैया उनके प्रिय छंद हैं।

इसमें केवल एक ही पद या छंद स्वतंत्र रूप से किसी भाव या रस अथवा कथा को प्रकट करने में समर्थ होता है।

आठ या आठ से अधिक सर्ग होने चाहिए, प्रत्येक सर्ग के अंत में छंद परिवर्तन होना चाहिए तथा सर्ग के अंत में अगले अंक की सूचना होनी चाहिए।
