देवनागरी से रोमन लिपि में लिप्यन्तरण के लिए दो पद्धतियाँ अधिक प्रचलित हैं : IAST और ITRANS. शून्य, एक या अधिक व्यंजनों और एक स्वर के मेल से एक अक्षर बनता है।

ये ‘देशी’ शब्द जनभाषा के प्रचलित शब्द थे, जो स्वभावतः अप्रभंश में भी चले आए थे।

इसका रहस्य गुरू के मुख से ग्रहण योग्य है।

परन्तु इन्साइक्लोपीडिया के अनुवाद रूप में विवकोश शब्द ही प्रचलित हो गया।

चरितकोश, कथाकोश इतिहासकोश, ऐतिहासिक कालकोश, जीवनचरितकोश पुराख्यानकोश, पौराणिक- ख्यातपुरुषकोश आदि आदि प्रकार के विविध नामरूपात्मक ज्ञानकोशों की बहुत सी विधाएँ विकसित और प्रचलित हो चुकी हैं।

अर्ध-अक्षर के रूप की सुगमता : खड़ी पाई को हटाकर - दायें से बायें क्रम में लिखकर तथा अर्द्ध अक्षर को ऊपर तथा उसके नीचे पूर्ण अक्षर को लिखकर - ऊपर नीचे क्रम में संयुक्ताक्षर बनाने की दो प्रकार की रीति प्रचलित है।

यदि इच्छा-शक्ति हो तो संस्कृत को हिब्रू की भाँति पुनः प्रचलित भाषा भी बनाया जा सकता है।

एक तीसरा नाम हिन्दुस्तान भी है जिसका अर्थ हिन्द की भूमि, यह नाम विशेषकर अरब तथा ईरान में प्रचलित हुआ।

बहुत पहले भारत का एक मुंहबोला नाम सोने की चिड़िया भी प्रचलित था।
