इस प्रकार ‘योग’ शब्द का अर्थ हुआ- समाधि अर्थात् चित्त वृत्तियों का निरोध।

पतञ्जलि ने योगसूत्र में, जो परिभाषा दी है 'योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः', चित्त की वृत्तियों के निरोध का नाम योग है।

इसके कारण उसकी पढ़ाई में काफी व्यवधान आने लगा।

मेगेस्थनीज के अनुसार राजा दिन में नहीं सोता वरन्‌ दिनभर न्याय और शासन के अन्य कार्यों के लिये दरबार में ही रहता है, मालिश कराते समय भी इन कार्यों में व्यवधान नहीं होता, केशप्रसाधन के समय वह दूतों से मिलता है।

संभोग (या शादी) में देरी, या गर्भनिरोध करने के प्राकृतिक या कृत्रिम तरीके को अपनाना ज्यादा मामलों में व्यक्तिगत या पारिवारिक निर्णय होता है, इसका राज्य नीति या सामाजिक तौर पर होने वाले अनुमोदनों से कोई सरोकार नहीं होता है।

बीच-बीच में व्यवधान होने पर भी भारतवर्ष में शताब्दियों तक समान राजनीतिक व्यवस्था रही है।

मनोविश्लेषण नामक शाखा मन के अन्दर छुपी उन जटिलताओं का उद्घाटन करने की विधा है जो मनोरोग अथवा मानसिक स्वास्थ्य में व्यवधान का कारण बनते हैं।
