निकटदृष्टि और दूरदृष्टि लोग जिन्हें दृष्टिवैषम्य (एस्टिग्मेटिज्म) भी होता है और जो नियमित कांटैक्ट लैंसों के लिये उपयुक्त नहीं होते हैं वे लोग टोरिक लैंसों का प्रयोग कर सकते हैं।

निकटदृष्टि दोष प्राय: अक्षीय होती है, अर्थात् इसका कारण आँख के अग्रपश्च (anteroposterior) व्यास में वृद्धि होती है।

इसमें बुध्न विशेष परिवर्तित नहीं होता और व्यक्ति की दूरदृष्टि (दूरदृष्टिता) और निकटदृष्टि दोष, दोनों में विकर हो सकता है।

लेंस के वल्क (cortex) के वर्तनांक में ह्रास या केंद्रक (nucleus) के वर्तनांक में वृद्धि होने से भी निकटदृष्टि दोष हो सकती है।

एकल दृष्टि लैंस से एक आंख की दूरदृष्टिता और दूसरी आंख की निकटदृष्टिता को ठीक किया जाता है।

यह आवश्यक नहीं है कि जिसकी दूरदृष्टि (दूरदृष्टिता) सामान्य हो उसकी निकट दृष्टि भी सामान्य हो, या सामान्य निकटदृष्टि दोष वाले की दूरदृष्टिता भी सामान्य हो।
