१९७७ में मृणाल सेन ने प्रेमचंद की कहानी कफ़न पर आधारित ओका ऊरी कथा नाम से एक तेलुगू फ़िल्म बनाई, जिसको सर्वश्रेष्ठ तेलुगू फ़िल्म का राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार भी मिला।



आम का बौर शीतल, वातकारक, मलरोधक, अग्निदीपक, रुचिवर्धक तथा कफ, पित्त, प्रमेह, प्रदर और अतिसार को नष्ट करनेवाला है।

उन्होंने सेवासदन, प्रेमाश्रम, रंगभूमि, निर्मला, गबन, कर्मभूमि, गोदान आदि लगभग डेढ़ दर्जन उपन्यास तथा कफन, पूस की रात, पंच परमेश्वर, बड़े घर की बेटी, बूढ़ी काकी, दो बैलों की कथा आदि तीन सौ से अधिक कहानियाँ लिखीं।

संस्कृत की एक सूक्ति में तांबूल के गुणवर्णन में कहा है - वह वातध्न, कृमिनाशक, कफदोषदूरक, (मुख की) दुर्गंध का नाशकर्ता और कामग्नि संदीपक है।

वे अपने उस गुरु भाई को सेवा का पाठ पढ़ाते और गुरुदेव की प्रत्येक वस्तु के प्रति प्रेम दर्शाते हुए उनके बिस्तर के पास रक्त, कफ आदि से भरी थूकदानी उठाकर फेंकते थे।

अगर कोई बलग़म या किसी चीज़ के कण श्वासनली में चिपके या फंसे हों तो वो हवा के इस तेज़ बहाव से मुंह की तरफ उड़ते हुए चले जाते हैं।

पूस की रात, कफ़न, शतरंज के खिलाडी, पंच परमेश्वर, नमक का दरोगा तथा ईदगाह आदि उनकी कहानियां खूब लोकप्रिय हुई।

१९३६ तक आते-आते महाजनी सभ्यता, गोदान और कफ़न जैसी रचनाएँ अधिक यथार्थपरक हो गईं, किंतु उसमें समाधान नहीं सुझाया गया।

अशुद्धताओं से मिश्रित यह श्लेष्मा या तो अनायास ही पी लिया जाता है, जिस से ये पेट में पहुँच कर वहां पर हाज़में के रसायनों द्वारा नष्ट कर दिया जाता है, या फिर बलग़म बन कर मुंह में उभर आता है जहाँ से इसे थूका या निग़ला जा सकता है।

अंगूर के सेवन से फेफड़े में जमा कफ निकल जाता है, इससे खाँसी में भी आराम आता है।
