सन् 1860 ई में फेक्नर (1801-1887) ने जर्मन भाषा में "एलिमेंट्स आव साइकोफ़िज़िक्स" (इसका अंग्रेजी अनुवाद भी उपलब्ध है) नामक पुस्तक प्रकाशित की, जिसमें कि उन्होंने मनोवैज्ञानिक समस्याओं को वैज्ञानिक पद्धति के परिवेश में अध्ययन करने की तीन विशेष प्रणालियों का विधिवत् वर्णन किया : मध्य त्रुटि विधि, न्यूनतम परिवर्तन विधि तथा स्थिर उत्तेजक भेद विधि।
