प्राचीन काल के , वशिष्ठ, शक्ति, पराशर, वेदव्यास, जैमिनी, याज्ञवल्क्य, कात्यायन इत्यादि ऋषियों को वेदों के अच्छे ज्ञाता माना जाता है।

विद्यापति मैथिली के आदिकवि तथा सर्वाधिक ज्ञाता कवि हैं।
