अधिकांश इस प्रकार की रचनाओं का उद्देश्य आलोचना करना, खिल्ली उड़ाना या छींटे कसना होता है किंतु इसमें असंयत और असंगत क्रियाओं या व्यवहारों के द्वारा मनोविनोद भी किया जा सकता है।

19 वीं सदी में ब्रिटिश शासन के प्रसार के साथ भारत के सभी शास्त्रीय नृत्यों का उपहास और खिल्ली उड़ाई गयी जिससे इनके प्रसार में गंभीर रूप से गिरावट हुई।

उन्होंने पुरोहितवाद, ब्राह्मणवाद, धार्मिक कर्मकाण्ड और रूढ़ियों की खिल्ली भी उड़ायी और लगभग आक्रमणकारी भाषा में ऐसी विसंगतियों के खिलाफ युद्ध भी किया।

अपनी रचनाओं के माध्यम से वह रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च के कठमुल्लापन एवं अन्य फ्रांसीसी संस्थाओं की खुलकर खिल्ली उड़ाता था।

ये शैतानवादी असल में परम्परागत धर्मों की खिल्ली उड़ाने के लिये ही दुष्टता के प्रतीक की पूजा करते हैं।
