ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि द्रविड़ जाति का उत्तर भारत में निषाद, किरात (मंगोल) और आर्य रक्त से मिश्रण हुआ तथा इन लोगों ने आर्य भाषाओं को ग्रहण कर लिया।

प्रजातीय मिश्रण की दृष्टि से भारत उत्तर-पश्चिम में आर्य, उत्तर-पूर्वं में किरात तथा निषाद और दक्षिण में द्रविड़ तथा निषाद मानव जातियों के लक्षण अधिक प्रबल हैं।

महाकवि भारवि ने अपने प्रसिद्ध ग्रन्थ किरातार्जुनीय महाकाव्य के हिमालय वर्णन खण्ड (पांचवा सर्ग, श्लोक १७) में किन्नर, गन्धर्व, यक्ष तथा अप्सराओं आदि देव-योनियों के किन्नर देश में निवास होने का वर्णन किया है।

জজজ उत्तरी भाग की ओर भोटिया, तामां‌, लिम्बू, शेरपा, महाभारत शृंखला में मगर, किरात, नेवार, गुरुं‌, सुनुवार और भीतरी तराई क्षेत्र में घिमाल, थारू, मेचै, दनवार आदि जातियों की बहुलता विशेष रूप से उल्लेखनीय है।

चन्द्रगुप्त की सेना में शक, यवन, किरात, कम्बोज, पारसीक तथा वह्लीक भी रहे होंगे।

इसकी विलक्षण विद्वत्ता जो सूर्य के प्रकाश के सामान सम्पूर्ण जम्बू द्वीप को आलोकित करेंगी वे तक्षशिला विश्वविद्यालय के आचार्य थे , उन्होंने मुख्यत: भील और किरात राजकुमारों को प्रशिक्षण दिया ।

इस नदी को किरात नदी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
